Art & Soul
Art & Soul
Live Creatively
Art is not only for artists. Art is a way of seeing the world, interacting with the world, and creating something that is more useful, more beautiful, more meaningful. We admire and are fascinated by artists and their work because these exemplify what we want our lives to be--beautiful, useful, and meaningful. We are enthralled by the paintings, moved by the music, and transported by the writing that artists create. Some of us might also try our hand at creating art ourselves. But life itself is the greatest art form. We only need to learn to live creatively, deeply, and meaningfully. Art & Soul will explore seven art forms. Each lesson will take its participants on a journey into the very soul of that art-form. Together we will explore the artist’s experience and vision, the role that this art-form plays in Jewish history and teachings, and the way that these can be applied in how we live our lives on a day-to-day basis.
COURSE BREAKDOWN
01/ Lesson
Painting and Drawing
The Inner Eye of the Artist
What is art? It is the power to reveal depth and meaning beyond what meets the eye. And it’s not just for artists—we all carry this inner vision which enables us to find beauty even in the most mundane areas of our lives.
02/ Lesson
Music
The Pen of the Soul
What is music? It stirs us like nothing else—speaking beyond words, expressing the inexpressible. Unlock its secret—in its mystery lies a gateway to the soul’s deepest wisdom.
03/ Lesson
Literature
The Art of Storytelling
We are storytellers; known as "speakers". From birth, we shape reality through words. When we master this art, we become partners in creation—crafting both personal and global meaning, not just receiving it.
04/ Lesson
Dance
Movement and Relationship
Life is movement. In every step and sway—toward a loved one, our community, and our Creator—we find that intimacy and distance are intertwined. And their tension creates the dance of life.
05/ Lesson
Clothing Design
Interface and Engagement
We change our clothes at will—textures, colors, shapes shifting with weather, function, and season. Yet these garments deeply shape how others see us and how we see ourselves. Just as the body has its clothes, the soul, too, has garments: the thoughts, words, and actions through which it finds expression. Both our physical and spiritual garments empower us to transcend our nature and grow beyond ourselves.
06/ Lesson
Architecture
The Art of Purpose
Any builder can build a house, but it takes an architect to create a true home—a place for your dreams, ambitions, and true self; where every detail reflects the personality and aspirations of its inhabitants. In this sense, we are all architects of our lives; when we live fully, our actions align with our deeper purpose, and are harmoniously reflected in the details of our existence.
07/ Lesson
Cuisine
The Art of Self-Transformation
Cooking transforms the inedible into the delicious. In mastering this art, we gain not only the means to nourish others, but also a model for transforming ourselves.
